Emergency: what to do if you entered your seed phrase online

Exposure is not always immediate

The situation rarely announces itself. A site looks familiar, a request seems routine, and the phrase gets entered before anything feels wrong. It is only afterwards, sometimes seconds later, that the doubt sets in.

In many cases, this kind of exposure begins with phishing: how to recognize and avoid it: a fake site, fake support flow, or familiar-looking request designed to make the action feel normal.

The instinctive response is panic. The more useful response is to ask a precise question: has control changed?

In crypto systems, that is what defines an emergency: whether someone else may now share authority over the wallet, not how urgent the situation feels.

What entering a seed phrase really means

A seed phrase is not a password. It is the source from which all of a wallet's cryptographic keys are derived. Anyone who obtains it can derive the same keys and exercise the same authority. For the underlying relationship between phrases, keys, and wallet control, see keys, addresses, and seed phrases.

Nothing changes on the blockchain at the moment of entry. No alert is triggered, no transaction is made. What changes is exposure: if the phrase was seen, copied, stored, or transmitted, the system has no way to distinguish the original holder from anyone else who now has the same information.

Why time matters

Exposure creates an asymmetric situation. Anyone who has the phrase can recreate the wallet at any moment, without permission and without warning. The blockchain does not ask who is signing. It processes valid instructions when they arrive.

This is why exposure is treated as serious, not because loss is certain, but because the wallet is no longer under singular control.

What recovery does and does not do

Restoring a wallet with the same seed phrase does not address the exposure. It recreates the same keys and restores the same authority, but anyone else with the phrase can do exactly the same thing.

There is no mechanism to revoke a seed phrase. The system cannot invalidate a copy of it, or flag that the original holder has "reclaimed" access. Recovery, in this sense, confirms control rather than restoring exclusivity.

Regaining exclusive control

The only way to restore exclusive control is to change keys entirely.

In practice, this means creating a new wallet from a new seed phrase, then transferring assets to it.

The blockchain treats this as a standard transfer. No priority, no alarm, no indication that anything unusual is happening. What matters is the outcome: assets held under keys that have not been exposed.

If you need an action-focused sequence, follow how to react if your seed phrase is compromised. You may also need to move funds using the same caution described in how to send and receive crypto safely.

Why hesitation increases risk

Exposure does not guarantee immediate loss. In many cases, nothing happens right away.

The problem is that uncertainty has been introduced and will remain as long as assets stay under the exposed keys. The system offers no warnings, no countdown, no signal that someone else may be preparing a transaction. The situation stays unresolved until the keys change.

That is why timing matters. Not as a reason to act in panic, but as a reason not to wait.

Illustration representing key takeaways and summary points

Key takeaways

  • A seed phrase gives full control over a wallet. Entering it online means exposing that control.
  • Nothing changes on-chain at the moment of entry, but the exposure is immediate.
  • Restoring the wallet with the same phrase does not fix the problem. It recreates the same vulnerable state.
  • Exclusive control is only recovered by moving assets to a new wallet with a new seed phrase.
